As partner of this year's BERLIN ART WEEK, Kunst im Westend e.V. is delighted to present a site-specific installation by Chinese artist LU YANG at the historic 'Kochhaus' of DRK Kliniken Berlin Westend.
LU YANG | DOKU: TRIAGE stages an encounter between medicine, technology and Buddhist concepts of reincarnation, expanding Lu Yang’s renowned DOKU universe into a unique spatial experience.
Lu Yang’s 3D animations and installations explore fundamental questions about the relationships between the body and consciousness, spirituality and science, technology and the limits of being human. For him, the hospital is not a neutral site: as a child, he spent significant time in emergency rooms, where he first encountered the fragility of the body. His installation at the historical ›Kochhaus‹ of DRK Kliniken Berlin Westend responds to this setting in a restrained, contemplative, and yet direct way, employing imagery from his renowned series ›Doku The Self‹ and ›Doku The Flow‹.
Lu Yang's work for Kunst im Westend e.V. is conceived around decommissioned hospital beds. Above each bed, a small adjustable screen with headphones allows viewers to lie down and watch the videos privately. Privacy filters ensure that the image is legible only from the viewing position.
The act of viewing becomes voluntary and intimate: the viewer chooses to lie down, put on the headphones and enter the work. Patients, relatives and visitors are not involuntarily exposed to the imagery upon entering the exhibition venue. In this setting, ›Doku The Self‹ and ›Doku The Flow‹ appear as private dream-states or moments of self-observation, linking the hospital bed, the viewer’s body and DOKU’s digital body with themes of life, death, identity, and transformation.
About LU YANG
Lu Yang works across 3D animation, immersive installation and digital technologies. His solo presentation ›Doku The Illusion‹ is currently on view at Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia. He is Deutsche Bank ›Artist of the Year‹ 2022; major solo-exhibitions include Kunsthalle Basel, Fondation Louis Vuitton Paris, PalaisPopulaire Berlin, New Museum New York, ARoS Aarhus and Mori Art Museum Tokyo. Lu Yang lives and works between Shanghai and Tokyo.
